Ashˈmiany
Town, centre of Ashmiany Rajon, Grodna Voblasc, on the Ashmianka River. 206 km north-east of Grodna, 129 km from Minsk, 17 km from the Ashmiany railway station (on the Maladziechna — Vilnius line). It is connected with the cities of Minsk, Vilnius, Grodna and towns of Lida and Smargon by highways.
In 1940, 9,004 inhabitants lived in Ashmiany.
In the first days of the war, at the end of June 1941, to the west of Ashmiany, the Reconnaissance Battalion (major I. T. Shchuka) of the 24th Samara-Ulyanovsk Iron Rifle Division fought with the advanced units of the German Tank Division of the 3rd Tank Group of general H. Hoth.
Ashmiany was invaded on June 26, 1941. At the hands of German Nazi invaders, 1,793 people died in the town and rajon. 4,000 Jews from Ashmiany and several neighbouring rajons were taken to the Ashmiany ghetto. Some were killed in the town and its surroundings, some were taken to Paneriai near Vilnius (Lithuania) and destroyed there.
The Ashmiany Underground Rajon Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belarus and Ashmiany Underground Rajon Committee of the Leninist Young Communist League of Belarus, the N. F. Gastello Partisan Brigade, and the independent “Bajavy” (combat one) Partisan Detachment operated in Ashmiany and the rajon. The Znamia Svobody («Знамя свободы», lit. ‘banner of freedom’) underground newspaper, i.e. the body of the Ashmiany Underground Rajon Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belarus, was published.
Ashmiany was liberated on July 7, 1944, by the soldiers of the 3rd (Lt.Col. K. A. Grytsenka) and 19th (colonel G. A. Pakhadziejew) Guards Tank brigades, 2nd Guards Motorised Rifle Brigade (Lt.Col. K. A. Andronov) of the 3rd Guards Tank Corps of the 5th Guards Tank Army of the 3rd Belarusian Front during the Vilnius offensive of 1944.
