Baˈranavickaja Gaˈzeta (orig. ‘Baranavickaja Hazeta’, «Баранавіцкая газэта»; lit. ‘Baranavichy newspaper’)
Newspaper, body of the German Nazi invasion authorities of the city of Baranavichy and local collaborators during the Great Patriotic War.
It was published from July 22, 1941 to June 24, 1944, in Baranavichy with a Latin alphabet, and from June 1943, with a Cyrillic one. It was issued twice a week.
In 1941, it was issued under the German name ‘Baranowitscher Zeitung’ (lit. ‘Baranavichy newspaper’) and published materials in German, Polish, and Belarusian. From January 1944, it was called ‘Pagonia’.
K. Berend, A. Burski, L. Garoshka, B. Shyshko were the editors.
It was circulated mainly in the western voblascs of Belarus.
Translated materials of the propaganda services of Nazi Germany about events at the fronts of World War II, orders and appeals of the invasion authorities, nationalist organisations, materials about the activities of local branches of the Belarusian People’s Self-Assistance, about the fight against partisans were printed therein.
It contained articles about national and cultural relations and educational activities under invasion, provincial life in the city of Baranavichy, towns of Slonim, Stowbcy and their surroundings. Excerpts of ‘From the History of Krywja — Belarus’ by Ja. Stankievich, essays about F. Skaryna, M. Smatrytski, A. Gurynovich, prose and verse works by M. Lagada, Ja. Pushcha, A. Zhvir, and others, anti-Soviet journalism were printed on the Baranavickaja Gazeta pages. Most of the newspaper’s materials were not signed.
