Bryansk Front of 1943

Formed on March 28, 1943 during the Great Patriotic War in the western direction as part of the 3rd (lieutenant general A. V. Gorbatov) and 61st (lieutenant general P. A. Belov) Combined Arms armies and the 15th Air Army (lieutenant general of Aviation N. F. Naumenko).

On April 29, 1943, the 63rd Army (lieutenant general U. Ja. Kalpakchy) joined the front, and on August 17, 1943, so did the 50th Army (lieutenant general I. V. Boldin). Later, the front included the 11th (lieutenant general I. I. Fediuninskij) and 11th Guards (lieutenant general I. Kh. Bagramian) Combined Arms, 3rd Guards (lieutenant general P. S. Rybalka) and 4th (general lieutenant V. M. Badanov) Tank armies.

In the Battle of Kursk, the Bryansk Front in July-August 1943 conducted the Oryol operation in cooperation with the troops of the left wing of the Western Front and the right wing of the Central Front.

During the Bryansk offensive of 1943, in September 1943, the front troops liberated the Bryansk industrial raion (district) and the eastern rajons of the BSSR, including rajon centres of Hocimsk, Klimavichy, Kasciukovichy, and Krychaw.

The Bryansk Front was disbanded on October 10, 1943. Its 3rd, 11th, 50th, and 63rd armies were turned over to the Central Front; the personnel of the front-line leadership was used to form the leadership of the Baltic Front where the 11th Guards and 15th Air armies were transferred to.

Front commanding officers were colonel general M. A. Reiters (March 28 — June 5, 1943); colonel general, from August 26, 1943, army general M. M. Popov (June 6 — October 10, 1943).

Members of the military council were lieutenant general I. Z. Susaikov, from July 7, 1943, lieutenant general L. Z. Miekhlis. Lieutenant general L. M. Sandalov was a headquarters chief.
