Colˈlaborators (French collaboration ‘cooperation’) during World War II.
Collaborated with the invaders during World War II, including in the case of the so-called building a ‘New Europe’, persons, political parties, social movements and non-governmental organisation in the other countries’ territories temporarily invaded by the troops of Hitlerite Germany and its allies.
Vivid examples of the collaborators were political, military, and cultural figures A. F. Pétain, P. Laval (France), V. Quisling (hence the synonym Quislingians), K. Hamsun (Norway), A. A. Vlasov (Russia), R. K. Astrowski (Belarus), and others.
Belarusian collaborators participated in economic, ideological, and other activities of the German Nazi occupation regime, including in punitive actions against partisans, underground members, and civilian population. At the same time, they set the goal of establishing a Belarusian national state under Germany protectorate, but the Hitlerite leadership had completely different plans for Belarus (see in the article “Ost”).
The situation at the fronts, the activity of the partisan movement forced the invaders to make certain adjustments in their policy towards Belarusian collaborationists and population of Belarus in general, which, however, did not change the terrorist and predatory overtone of the occupation regime. In December 1943, by the order of the German authorities, the so-called Belarusian Central Council (Rada) which announced in March 1944 the mobilisation of the Belarusian Home Defence was established.
